So a new social network site has literally taken off! Ello is the new “anti-facebook” social network that promises to be ad free! Oh and it’s INVITE Only! Remember when Facebook was originally “invite only?” We were just talking about this in my Media class this morning! Now, according to an interesting article from Vox.com 31,000 people an hour are joining the site. You can click the hyper link to read the article.

I really like what the article has to say about Ello. “People genuinely dislike Facebook for a lot of reasons. Facebook has ads, can be noisy, and sells your information. Facebook is always trying to get you to play games and be friends with people you don’t like. Some people hate Facebook because they hate themselves. For these reasons, an ad-free social network that doesn’t sell your information and allows you to mute your friends is a welcome alternative.” Interesting… no ads and muting my friends!

So I signed up for an invite. I am genuinely interested to see where this will go.

As of 3:25pm I just got an email from the site that says, “We will invite you as soon as we can. Ello is currently in beta, and we are inviting new users in small groups as we roll out new features.”  Neato!

Finding a new purpose

Now that the school semester is approaching the midterm point with ever increasing speed, I have found that my new media class is quickly becoming my favorite class. Not only is my professor engaging but she makes the class think. We’ve been talking about blogging this week and learning about the historical aspects of it. For example, I didn’t know there originally two kinds of blog (based on the textbook we’re reading): filter and journal style blogging. Now I do! Interestingly my professor gave us a challenge – try to write a mission statement for your blog, find a focus.

I know that I first started this blog with the intent to blog about my trials and tribulations as a college senior. Now that am, yet again, a college senior it seems to still fit. However, I also wanted to improve my writing skills. Well, no. Hone my skills. Most readers will admit that my writing needs improvement – or an editor. Anyone want to help me edit my blog posts?! Just kidding, or am I?

I love learning about new media. I almost considered majoring in it instead of Electronic Media Production. Seeing as how production seems to be quite an uphill battle maybe I should go with my original idea?! It is such a shame that one cannot double major in the same department. What fun that would be.

I have found that my blog seems to grow stale after a few days after not blogging. I’ve been so busy I have not had a real chance to dedicate time to daily blogging or maintaining the hebdomadal (I love that word) posting that I have written my calendar. Every Friday, my Mac reminds me to “BLOG!” I ignore the reminder however, thinking that “Oh, I have nothing to blog about” or “my writing sucks.” I truly need to cut that out.

BARBRA and Media

So if you’ve been reading any of my posts from 2012 you know, or should know by now, that I love all things STREISAND related. Next week, the legendary Streisand releases a brand new album entitled Partners, featuring 12 new recordings featuring the greatest male vocalists! By male vocalists I mean Josh Groban, John Mayer, John Legend, Lionel Richie, et al. Also she’s getting her own Sirius XM channel starting at 5pm this evening and running, for a special limited engagement, until October 10th!

Featured on Sirius Channel 69 “Escape,” Streisand’ s show will include a Town Hall that was recorded on Wednesday in New York City. A handful of lucky fans got to be in the same room with the legendary vocalist – Lucky devils! Color me completely jealous! That will air on Sunday, September 14th 12:00pm.

Columbia has lined up a complete slew of appearances to plug the new album, and it’s #1 on Amazon! Go BARBRA! For a complete list of her appearances you can visit my favorite site barbra-archives.com

Okay, that is enough Babs for today. I will be posting my full review of her album, Partners when it debuts next Tuesday!

Blogging and New Media

I just saw on Mashable that Facebook is taking cues from Snapchat and may be experimenting with “Disappearing Posts.” For anyone who uses the Snapchat app, we are all familiar with the 10 second window in which to see someone’s picture or video. Now according to writer, Adario Strange, that same feature may be coming to Facebook. You can read the article here. Apparently Facebook is running a small pilot program for a feature that “lets people schedule deletion of their posts in advance” (according to a Facebook spokesman). I’m not sure I’d be too keen on seeing my own posts expire or be deleted, but I wouldn’t mind seeing annoying posts disappear off my own newsfeed.

To be honest, I wish Facebook would just poll users and ask them what they would like to see happen with Facebook. What sort of integration would users like to see?! How would users improve the messenger app for iOS. Oh! Speaking of the messenger App, what exactly is Facebook planning for its iOS apps with the new iPhone 6 and iOS 8 due out soon?! Hmmm, that may be something to watch.

By the way, the Escape channel on Sirius XM is nothing but glorified elevator music, if you’re into that sort of thing.

How do you keep up with your blog?! There are so many writers and authors who are consistent with their postings. How do ones avoid boredom and keep regularly posting. Sounds strange but that’s where I am. I keep wondering why I say “I’m going to post more” but never do?!

Currently I’m still looking for a new job. I have updated my resumes about one billion times on Careerbuilder, Monster, etc etc. I just keep wondering, “what should I be doing with my life?” I’m tired of dead-end work, going about my life as if I am in some sort of trance.

I’m registered to return to school this fall to obtain a second bachelors degree in Electronic Media Communication. I miss learning. I miss having structure and a purpose to my day.

Besides blogging more regularly there is something else I need to focus on, being more positive and upbeat about my life.

Taking out the garbage

I never enjoy talking to people about my problems, I always feel like I’m burdening people when I dish about my issues: stress, emotional and mental problems, etc. Today was different. I didn’t have much hope for my second counseling session, but I was my unease was quickly swept aside by a gentle soul who, thankfully, listened to me. Going back some fifteen years, I realized that the emotional and verbal abuse that I had endured for years was taking a toll on me in the present day. My mind continually remembers and replays the emotional distress caused by a father who sent me mixed messages a child: at once ridiculing me and then telling me he “loves me.” The confusion was absolute. Today my social worker enlightened me, “Chris, get rid of the garbage,” she said. “You’ve been carrying around this garbage of negativity and cynicism that happened so many years ago, let it go,” she implored me. “Get to know yourself, find out what you want to do.”

No longer do I have to please other people. I need to find out what want to do, and do it.

I was nervous about letting my guard down and talking to someone. I find now that it is a most liberating experience.

Twenty-Nine days in..

It’s almost the end of January, and thus far 2014 has proved both rewarding and challenging.

My temporary assignment with a local healthcare company ended earlier than my employment agency realized, so I decided to strike out on my own and search for a job. Fortune smiled and I can happily say I have a new job starting next month! Thank You, Monster.com. I am very excited about it too. Although I will admit, I was very disheartened when my temp job ended; however, I used that to my advantage and secured something new as quickly as I could! – That’s the rewarding part, thus far.

However, this new year has proved something of a challenge, especially when one is trying to purchase a home for the first time.

My boyfriend and I are trying very hard to strike out on our own and find a nice property to call our own; however, it has been insanely difficult to do because something always happens. We have been looking for two years, and every time we have submitted an offer on a house Fortuna spins her wheel another direction  (i.e: bank backing out, bad seller counter-offer, etc etc.) For seasoned veterans, this is just how the ball bounces and the cookie crumbles; however, for first-time home buyers the sour experiences can be rather bitter to swallow.  This time, a totally different problem has surfaced and threatens to shoot down our dreams of home ownership. Regardless, I’m remaining hopeful that a mixture of good fortune and Providence will see us through.

I’m also dedicating myself to blogging more in 2014!
